Hatzel & Buehler was selected as the electrical design-assist and construction partner for AstraZeneca’s new 84,000-square-foot cell therapy manufacturing facility in Rockville, Maryland, one of the nation’s premier bio-life science hubs. The facility will produce cutting-edge cell therapies targeting blood cancers such as lymphoma and leukemia, enabling global clinical trials.
To meet the stringent reliability requirements of a mission-critical biomanufacturing environment, the facility was engineered for zero electrical downtime. This required a fully redundant electrical system to ensure uninterrupted operation.
Working in close collaboration with AstraZeneca and CRB throughout the design and construction phases, Hatzel & Buehler provided the following scope of work:
- Coordination with Pepco for utility infrastructure upgrades
- Installation of (2) new switchgear assemblies
- Installation of (2) 2500kW generators for full backup power
- Installation of (2) Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units
- Installation of (5) interior switchboards
- Complete lighting and lighting control systems
- Backup lighting inverter system
- Comprehensive fire alarm system including VESDA, Vortex, and inert gas fire protection
This Design Assist IPD project reflects Hatzel & Buehler’s commitment to delivering complex, high-performance electrical systems that support advanced life-saving technologies in the life sciences sector.
